The Somatic Chromosomes of Sophora jernandeziana ( Fabaceae ) , an Endemic Tree from Robinson Crusoe Island 1
The mitotic chromosome number and karyotype of Sophora fernandeziana (Phil.) Skottsb. (subfamily Papilionoideae) are reported for the first time. The chromosome number, 2n = 18, is the modal number reported for the genus. The chromosomes are small (average length 1.55 ± 0.23 J.1m) and bear no satellites. The intrachromosomal and interchromosomal asymmetry indices were AI = 0.26 and A2 = 0.18, r...
متن کاملIsolation and Characterization of 13 Microsatellite Loci from a Korean Endemic Species, Sophora koreensis (Fabaceae)
To evaluate the population genetics structure as a means of devising conservation strategies, we developed microsatellite primers for Sophora koreensis, a narrowly endemic and endangered species in Korea. Thirteen polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed in Korean populations of S. koreensis. Genetic diversity was analyzed in 40 individuals from two populations. The number of alleles p...
متن کاملInvited Commentary Invited Commentary: Rescuing Robinson Crusoe
Estimating the independent effect of ‘‘place’’ on health outcomes has proven quite difficult. In this issue of the Journal, Auchincloss and Diez Roux contribute a lucid introduction to agent-based simulation models and argue that they may be a fruitful alternative to current approaches to the problem. Insofar as conceptual understanding must precede empirical investigation, this author agrees. ...
متن کاملBiostratigraphic evidence for dramatic Holocene uplift of Robinson Crusoe Island, Juan Fernández Ridge, SE Pacific Ocean
Hotspot oceanic islands typically experience subsidence due to several processes related to migration of the oceanic plate away from the mantle plume and surface flexural loading. However, many other processes can interrupt subsidence, some of which may be associated with catastrophic events. A study of the biostratigraphy and sedimentology of Holocene deposits on Robinson Crusoe Island (RCI) o...
متن کامل[High prevalence of specific language impairment in Robinson Crusoe Island. A possible founder effect].
BACKGROUND Specific language impairment (SLI) occurs in 2% to 8% of preschool children. Major and candidate genes are probably involved. Genetic drift is a cause for the presence of high frequencies of deleterious alíeles of a specific disease and the founder effect is one of its forms. Robinson Crusoe Island has 633 inhabitants and its actual population began with 8 families that repopulated t...
